Seventeenth Century Movie

Well, this certainly augers well for our course. A new film is being released this week on a seventeenth century writer -- John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester -- entitled The Libertine. The main thespian is one John Depp, secondaries include a "John Malkovich" and a "Samantha Morton,"and from what I have read of the film's account of Wilmot it seems to treat its subject, from one standpoint at least, in a manner approximating a seventeenth century moralism.

It will be great to have a class film evening for this. Would you each mind leaving a comment to this post listing what evening or evenings and times you might be available next week?

  • Any evening except Friday good for me.

Just FYI, Rotten Tomatoes has some rather unenthusiastic reviews for this movie.

" This might be worth viewing if the film's characters came to life or its abundant philosophical and moral observations went more than pockmarked-skin deep."

  • Provided that I am given a couple of days notice, I should be available any time next week. I have been looking forward to this movie for a couple of years (it has been in post-production since 2002). After studying much of Rochester's life and works with an enthusiastic Jim Daems I believe this movie should be, at the very least, quite entertaining.
